How to Improve Your Handwriting and Penmanship
The first step to improving handwriting or turning the scrawl that you are unhappy with, into a nice, readable longhand script, is the pen and paper you write with.
Always use good quality pens, be they ballpoint or fountain. Get yourself some good calibre stationery too.
You won't be able to produce writing of a good standard if the tools you use are moderate.
Next you should make sure that you are comfortable when you sit down to practise.
Find yourself a table and chair that are right for you. Make sure that the table you use is at the right height and doesn't cause you to strain, by being to high or too low.
Up until now you may have been avoiding writing longhand because your handwriting is poor. From now on find every excuse you can for writing with a pen.
To improve penmanship try some creative writing exercises. Print out some large letters on an A4 sheet of a nice handwriting font from your computer. Try copying it longhand.
Write any notes, letters or lists you can. this will help develop your handwriting and strengthen coordination between hand and eye, aswell as improving your writing muscles.
Study other peoples writng styles if you can. Get a good book from the library, and see if you can locate some old script. Before computers everything was written longhand so the practitioners became very skilled at it.
Choose and use as many different writing instruments as you can. Have a go with a calligraphy pen. This obviously wont be suitable for everyday use, but can give your writing a very artistic look.
Try and develop your own personal style. This could be difficult to start with, as you obviously feel bad about your writing. Stick with it though, and try to embellish your letters wherever possible.
Practise writing your autograph, and see if you can create a really fancy signature that any celebrity would be proud of.
Make improving your handwriting a long term personal goal, and practise diligently and within a very short space of time your penmanship will improve.
